ROTARY CAROLS AT HORSLEY PARK - 2023 Volunteers from the Rotary Club of Wetherill Park, their friends, families and local residents, as well as volunteers from Horsley Park RFS and Eastern Creek RFS, combined with 40 performers who braved the 42-degree heatwave to present the 27th Rotary Carols at Horsley Park on Saturday 9th December. We thank our Partner and Major Sponsor Smithfield RSL (via the ClubGrants program). The always-entertaining FREE event culminated with a dazzling display from Foti Fireworks (sponsored by St Johns Park Bowling Club)and the drawing of the raffle with over $10,000 prize value.

 The 27th Annual Golf Day was a success with 62 players, which was more than last year and almost $4,000 raised for Autism Spectrum Wetherill Park. The weather was kind, giving us a cool start and near perfect playing conditions on a course that thankfully had almost fully recovered from an extremely dry summer. The wonderful ladies and gents from Autism Spectrum Wetherill Park toiled throughout the day, doing the bulk of the food preparation, BBQing and serving. Other non-playing volunteers also deserve a mention... we're sure all of them could have found a different way to enjoy their day! Alan, Darren, Peter, Rick, Silvana and Stewart all worked hard either setting up from 7am, manning the ship during play, or packing up at 5pm a long day. Congratulations to the winners (pictured at the beginning of this bulletin) Wayne Levi, Luke Crawford, Peter Hughes and Paul Levi and runners up (pictured above) Trevor Bragg, Gus Guthrie, Steve Mock and Steve Johnson. We were blessed to have two impressive speakers presenting on work they are currently involved with that are having fantastic outcomes. John Soliman, president and founder of Reaching, talked about how his not for profit organisation helps people in need with food and material aid. They help predominately through the delivery of free groceries and materials to the homeless. People who donate can choose a type of recipient they'd like to help by purchasing a targeted grocery pack for a pensioner, single parent or a family. For more information go to the Reaching website. Ashley Robinson (pictured above), Student Woman of the Year 2019 and a Humanitarian Affairs Peace Ambassador 2019, talked about her studies and work in looking into systemic responses of the legal system for areas of conflict such as wars and emergencies. At 23, Ashley is studying a Bachelor of Laws and Bachelor of Criminal and Community Justice. In May's meeting, John Pillay from the Rotary Club of Liverpool West, spoke about the Club's water bore and toilet block projects in Fiji and the challenges faced in successfully completing and maintaining that infrastructure. He also spoke about the fruitful relationship they have formed with the local Fijian Rotary Club to make these projects such a success.

An estimated 5.9 million children aged under five die each year because of malnutrition, inadequate health care and poor sanitation. All of which can be easily prevented.

A recent activity took place supporting the Aspect Schools (formerly the Autism School) at Wetherill Park, with Carl, Tony, Roy and I BBQing for about 60 teachers, parents and children as part of their meet and greet night. We are planning on supporting their walkathon at the end of March, where we have been asked to BBQ again for about three hours. More details will be sent out shortly, but please flag this in your diaries and let us know if you can assist.

For those on Facebook, you will have seen already that we held another successful Birthday / Carols Thank -You function on 25th February at St Johns park Bowling Park. As well as passing on our thanks to supporters we also presented cheques to several beneficiaries. We had several special guests on the night including the Fairfield City Mayor, Frank Carbone; the State Member for Prospect Dr Hugh McDermott; and our District Governor, Sue Hayward. I’d like to pass on a special Thanks to Roy for all his efforts in organising the night and making it the success it was; and, to Helen who took on the role of MC, at very short notice. My thanks also go to all our members that attended.

 Music has been an important part of leading an ordinary life for students at the Music School for Children With Disabilities in Honor of Paul Harris in Lublin, Poland. Founded by Rotary members, the school serves 20 students with various disabilities, including Down syndrome, autism, and visual impairments. The Rotary Club of Lublin-Centrum-Maria Curie-Sklodowska has provided funding with help from Rotary Foundation Matching Grants and the Henryk Wieniawski Musical Society, which houses the school. After their son Mateusz was born with underdeveloped eyes, Mariusz and Joanna Kania looked for ways to help him be active. When he showed an aptitude for music, they looked for a teacher and were thrilled to find the Paul Harris music school.

 For years, Angalia Bianca had slept in abandoned buildings throughout Chicago. She stole. She did drugs. She spent time in and out of jail for forgery, theft, trespassing, and possession of narcotics. But after she landed in prison for the seventh time, something changed -- Bianca knew she wanted a better life. She just didn’t know how to make it happen. After serving her time, Bianca sought help from a local homeless organization, A Safe Haven, and moved to its shelter in the Rogers Park neighborhood. Bianca followed the program closely -- she attended all the required meetings, passed drug tests, and volunteered at every opportunity.

 What is it like taking a large team to Africa? It has probably been one of the most rewarding experiences in my life. In mid February, I began leading Rotary members from all over the East Coast of the United States through Ghana. I’ve tried to give the team a warm Ghanaian welcome like I’ve received on my earlier trips. A large trip is a real blessing because each person sees Ghana and our work in a different way.
A highlight for the team was greeting the chief of Sagadugu. The team got excited about buying goats and food for children in the villages where I support eight churches. It was good to see the pastors of most of the eight churches, and I had to explain that we were just passing through on our way to Bolgatanga.

 Throughout India and around the world, Rotary clubs are celebrating a major milestone: India has gone three years without a new case of polio. The last reported case was a two-year-old girl in West Bengal on 13 January 2011. To mark this historic triumph, Rotary clubs illuminated landmarks and iconic structures throughout the country with four simple but powerful words, "India is polio free." The three-year achievement sets the stage for polio-free certification of the entire Southeast Asia region by the World Health Organization. The Indian government also plans to convene a polio summit in February to commemorate this victory in the global effort to eradicate polio.
